White Fillings

Composite "white" fillings, made of composite, are used to restore teeth that have small cavities. They are called "white" fillings because of the natural, tooth color of the material. New white fillings can be matched to the tooth's natural colour giving a beautiful, and virtually invisible, result.

Before - amalgam fillings
After - white fillings
White fillings are an alternative to silver (amalgam) fillings. Metallic fillings can turn black with age and they are easy to see inside your mouth. In the past, white fillings were placed only on front teeth, but recently a stronger more durable material has been developed that can withstand the chewing pressure of back teeth.

White fillings are most commonly used for:
  • Cosmetic reasons
  • Patients who prefer mercury-free fillings
  • Patients with sensitivity to heat or cold - the composite resin doesn't conduct temperature changes as fast as silver or gold.
Composite filling is resin based and is applied as a putty-like material. This can be moulded to the exact shape of the tooth and is then set using a visible blue light.
